Sustainability, Uncorked
We’re lifting the lid on what sustainability really means in the wine world. We believe better choices start with better information. Clear, honest and free from marketing spin. At Vino Better Organic, we’re proud to support growers who are genuinely committed to sustainable agriculture and transparently doing the work, not just talking about it.
What does “sustainable” even mean in the wine world?
In wine, sustainable usually means making wine with fewer inputs, less waste, healthier soils and more care for people and land - without completely turning the winery upside down.
Longer answer: it’s a broad term. Most producers are genuinely doing the work. Others… are doing the bare minimum. That’s why transparency matters. At Vino Better Organic, we actively seek out and support the winemakers who are truly committed - the ones making thoughtful, practical changes in the vineyard and winery, not just on the label. Greenwashing is a real issue, and we’re not interested in sustainable language without sustainable practice behind it.
Understanding the difference between:
Sustainable wine & certified sustainable wine
Again, it’s about verification.
Sustainable wine often means reduced water use, renewable energy, better labour practices, and lighter environmental impact.
Certified sustainable wine means those claims have been checked, measured and approved by an independent organisation.
Organic wine & certified organic wine
This is where it gets interesting. Organic wine can be made with organic grapes and low-impact practices, but without formal certification.
Certified organic wine means an independent body has audited the vineyard and winery to confirm they meet strict organic standards - no synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers, plus clear rules around additives and sulphur.
There are fantastic vineyards doing genuinely good work in the non-certified organic space. That said, transparency is key. It’s important that organic winemaking practices can be clearly explained and consistently upheld.
Biodynamic wine & certified biodynamic wine
Biodynamic farming goes a step further than organic. It treats the vineyard as a living ecosystem - soils, plants, animals, people, and yes… the lunar calendar.
Biodynamic wine may follow these principles informally.
Certified biodynamic wine has been verified by bodies like Demeter, with strict rules, documentation and regular inspections.
What does the word “organic” mean on a wine bottle without certification?
In Australia, the word organic can legally appear on a wine label without the wine being certified organic. There’s no mandatory certification requirement for domestic sales, which creates loopholes and room for interpretation, and sadly, at times, misuse. While most producers use the term in good faith, others rely on vague language rather than verified farming practices. For exports, the rules are far stricter: any wine labelled organic must be independently certified.

Greenwashing in the Wine Industry - We’re Not Here for It
Buzzwords like natural, clean, eco and sustainable are often used without clear definitions, standards or proof. Pretty labels, leafy language, vague claims - you’ve seen it.
That’s why we look beyond the marketing and focus on what’s actually happening in the vineyard and winery. At Vino Better Organic, we vet our growers carefully and work only with producers who can clearly stand behind their practices.
